The Story
Scouts taking part in the current Gambia Expedition are seeing first hand the impacts of food insecurity in Soma and the surrounding area. We are launching this fundraiser to allow Kaira Konko to continue to provide an essential lifeline to those in need.

The Gambia is predominantly an agriculture-based economy and faces tremendous challenges as a result of the changing climate. Crop production is extensively subsistence-based and rain-fed, with persistently declining productivity among major staple crops such as rice, maize, groundnut, and millet.
Farmers have faced increasingly frequent adverse climatic events in recent years. Rising sea level impacts the River Gambia, leading to heightened soil salinity, impacting crop yields. Heavier, more destructive rains can wash away entire harvests and lead to increased erosion, and high winds can damage both equipment and storage facilities, hampering agricultural productivity.
Additionally, over 80% of rice, a major staple food in The Gambia, is imported, which exposes the country’s food system to external geopolitical and economic shocks, such as the ongoing war in Ukraine, which have significant effects upon global food supply.
