The Story
Hello
Some of you may remember that last year I sent out an annoying Christmas email seeking sponsorship (strictly no more than £5/$5/E5 per donor) for my plan to run every day of the 12 Days of Christmas (5-10km) in aid of Masanga Hospital in Sierra Leone.
Once a thriving District Hospital, it was destroyed in the civil war but now through the amazing efforts of a multi-national team of doctors and other healthcare workers, it is re-establishing itself as a vital health centre. My brother Dr Oz and nephew Dr Paddy have both worked there and have an on-going involvement.
Well, I'm going to tackle the Christmas Run again this year - starting Christmas Eve and finishing on Little Christmas on Jan 6 - and again I am after sponsorship of no more than £5/E5/$5. I'll aim to beat last year's total distance (104.89km).
I know that we all have additional financial pressures at this time of year and I quite understand if people feel I'm pushing my luck approaching you again. But if anyone does wish to donate, then huge thanks and you are really helping to improve the care of patients and the working conditions of the staff.
To give you an idea of how the money will be spent:
£25 : Cures one child of severe malaria
£30 : Two weeks hospital admission for one patient
£50 : One caesarean section, saving mother and baby
£100 : One major abdominal surgery
£500 : One week's medication for one ward
£1000 : One nurse’s salary for a year
£2000 : One year food supply for paediatric ward
Best wishes
Liz
