The Story
This December, our local and international hospital staff members will participate in the annual 10km around Masanga in the memory and spirit of Dr Wouter Nolet to raise money for Masanga Hospital.
Dr Wouter Nolet was a Dutch medic who died in 2019, aged just 32, after contracting Lassa fever following emergency surgery on a pregnant woman at Masanga.
He was part of an ongoing international initiative - it includes doctors and nurses from the UK - who are working to 'rehabilitate' Masanga as a major medical centre after the devastation of the civil war. Yes, the war was some time ago but its legacy on healthcare provision is profound.
You do not have to be in Masanga to participate in the 2023 Wouter Run! Many of us will be supporting from afar by taking on various challenges in our local areas. We invite you all to join us in spirit and run 10k over the Christmas and New Year period from your hometowns! And if you can collect donations amongst friends and family, it would go a long way towards helping our project.
Any donations will help provide maternity, paediatric, surgery and general medical care to our patients as well as to improve working conditions of health workers in Masanga Hospital, Tonkolili District, Sierra Leone.
