The Story

Vox Urbane is committed to fostering new talent, and urgently addressing the lack of singers of diversity in classical choral singing. Through our young artist training and mentoring initiative, Vox Next Gen, we provide a pathway into the singing profession for young singers from backgrounds not traditionally well represented in classical music. These include diverse ethnicity, gender-diverse, low socio-economic backgrounds, and neuro-diverse. This list is not exhaustive and our guiding principle is to tackle all barriers to access and participation. In its first year of operation, the singing of Vox Next Gen has been described as ‘polished’ and ‘genuinely different’ by The Guardian. Each year, eight Vox Next Gen singers aged 18-24, are selected by audition. They undergo a year-long programme which includes group tuition and rehearsals, individual mentoring and advice, singing and musicianship training, expert coaching in rehearsal and performance etiquette, as well as guidance in all aspects of how to embark on a career as a classical singer. Through working alongside their inspirational mentors taken from the professional and diverse line-up of Vox Urbane, the Next Gen young artists are shown by example that a place exists for them in classical choral music. Vox Urbane is the first and only choir to offer this in the UK.
